St. Nicholas'

The fine church of St. Nicholas at the foot of Westgate Street is a prominent feature of the city, with its truncated spire, and the clock overhanging the pavement.

The church was declared redundant over 30 years ago. Since then it has been in the care of the Churches’ Conservation Trust which has carefully restored it and appointed a custodian to keep the church open for visitors .

The Benefice is also glad to be able occasionally to make use of the church. The Eucharist was celebrated there on St. Nicholas’ Day 1998 - an event etched on the minds of all who attended, as St. Nicholas’ day is 6th December, and the church has no heating system at all.

The Friends of St. Nicholas web site contains much further information about the church, together with photographs.
